Prince of Fools by Mark Lawrence

Prince of Fools (The Red Queen's War, #1)My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I don’t usually like anti-heroes, but a humorous rake is a different matter all together. The author, writing in the point of view of the foolish prince, took me on a grand adventure. A quest that gave his anti-hero all the opportunities to be a better man. The main character’s resistance to these opportunities made me laugh and cringe in equal measure.

The magical characters that filled this world were intriguing. The collection of people they met along the way added mystery and fun to the plot.

I liked both Prince Jalan and Snorri, but they did not engage me as much as most fictional characters I’ve previously come across. I was not emotionally invested on them – although they did entertain me.

I would recommend this book to adventure-lovers and those who enjoy a good quest.
