My rating: 5 of 5 stars
There was a review of this book that stuck to me when I considered buying it. It went something like, Brent Weeks is so good, I hate him! I know what that reviewer means now. The author wrote the story so well that you can’t stop reading. I was so engaged and invested in the twists and turns of the story that I kept wanting more of it.
It’s not a perfect story, there were certain story lines that I did not understand the purpose of like the imprisoned brother. But I can’t help but think that it’s going to be explained in the next installment of the series. I enjoyed it so much, I can forgive the things that don’t make sense.
I love happy endings – and when the ending I wanted came around 20 or so chapters before the end of the book, I was sure that something devastating will happen to my favorite character and I will hate the actual ending. Something devastating did happen, but it was so well written that I was not turned off by it at all. I think it’s because the author loves his characters so much that he holds out hope – he doesn’t crush them completely.
I must end this with a warning though, if you’re not prepared to read a series of several books – don’t read this. Because if you thought the first book was addicting, this was so much worse!
